Notes:     A successful General, Isaac Comnenos usurped the throne in hopes of reversing the slide in Byzantine fortunes and restoring the strength of the armed forces. His coins depict him in an unabashedly militant pose, brandishing a sword. Very early, he attempted to appropriate church funds for the military, which brought him into conflict with the Patriarch Michael Cerularius. Isaac arrested and tried the Patriarch on trumped-up charges, but the populace became so incensed Isaac was forced to abdicate. He spent his remaining days as a Studite monk.
