Notes:     In early 42 BC, Caesar's chief assassins and now the republican leaders, Brutus and Cassius met in Smyrna to devise strategy and extort the wealthy communities of Asia Minor to finance the impending war against the Caesarian forces under Antony and Octavian. The legate Lentulus Spinther, a former Pompeian and now on of Cassius' lieutenants, was sent to assist Brutus and struck this coin at about the same time, one of the earliest types to honor the tyrannicide. As former members of the pontifical college, the use of pontifical symbols might seem a natural choice. Yet their connection with some of the fundamental principles, as well other types promoting liberty, might reflect more the restoration of old-style republican values which came with Caesar's assassination.
