Very rare. Ex BCD Collection (LHS, 8 May 2006), lot 1416; R.C. Lockett Collection (Glendining 27 May 1959), lot 1998 (part of); R. Allatini Collection (Ars Classica XIII, 27 June 1928), lot 808; Sir Hermann Weber Collection, 2323.An important city in northern Arkadia, Kleitor was originally a member of the Peloponnesian League before becoming an influential member of the Arkadian Confederacy in the early 5th century BC. Her first coinage was struck as a member of the Arkadian Confederacy, but the present piece is from among the earliest coins struck as a local coinage. Unlike the confederate issues, these coins have purely local types, and are quite rare. |
